Lasius niger is a robust species and forgives minor care mistakes, especially for beginners. A test tube nest is sufficient for founding. As the colony grows, it can be expanded to a larger nest or formicarium.
The animals require adequate moisture supply, a water source, and secure escape prevention.
The workers primarily feed on sugary liquids such as honey water or sugar water. For brood development, they also need protein-rich food, such as suitable feeder insects.
Lasius niger undergoes hibernation. During this time, activity is significantly reduced. Correct hibernation is essential for long-term species-appropriate care and supports the colony's natural life cycle.
